AEGIS ANNOUNCES WIDE-REACHING REVISIONS TO HIPAA POLICIES

2/1/2010 - Canoga Park, CA– Jade Kelly, Corporate Counsel, announces comprehensive revisions to Aegis Medical Systems’ patient health information policies. Ms. Kelly stated that, “Such changes are necessary due to the passage of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 (“ARRA”), which includes changes to the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (“HIPAA”). The changes are being collectively referred to as the Health Information Technology for Economic and Clinical Health Act (“HITECH Act”).”

Becky Heinicke, Director of Quality Assurance, noted that, “Aegis has always held the confidentiality of its patients as its highest priority, as evidenced through its well-established policies and practices that rigorously protect the health information of patients. Aegis continues to be committed to patient confidentiality by amending all HIPAA Policies and forms to comply with the HITECH Act. These changes include, but are not limited to, the revision of the company’s Business Associates Agreement, Notice of Privacy Practices, and Releases of Information. The early measures Aegis has taken to comply with the HITECH Act, place it in compliance well before the February 17, 2010 deadline imposed by the law.”

Kiran Adigupola, Director of IT, added that, “Aegis also conducted an all-inclusive review if its IT Department policies and practices, related to data encryption and destruction, to ensure adherence to the guidelines of the new law. Although electronic data is extremely portable and transferable, we have taken measures to secure patient health information and render it unusable and undecipherable to unauthorized individuals.”
