NEW REGULATION FOR CERTIFICATION
OF COUNSELORS IN ALCOHOL AND DRUG PROGRAMS

Canoga Park, California – Steve Maulhardt, Vice President, has expressed his satisfaction upon the approval of a new regulation requiring the certification of all personnel directly engaged in the provision of services to patients in recovery from alcohol and drug addiction.

Mr. Maulhardt has stated, “The campaign for certification of counselors in alcohol and drug programs has been a long and uphill battle for the last three years.”  He further added, “The new regulation compliments Aegis’ efforts to raise the clinical standards of NTP’s, and makes it compatible with other medical and behavioral services.”

The new regulation requires a training curriculum of 155 hours and 2000 hours of internship and 2050 hours of practicum, and was a compromise from the initial proposed curriculum, that was supported by Aegis, of 550 hours.  This position was supported by Aegis and the California Association of Alcohol and Drug Educators, which encompasses over 40 academic institutions.  The main objection came from the remaining NTP providers, and the State Department of Alcohol and Drug Programs, on the grounds of the scarcity of qualified personnel and the effects of the hiring of more qualified professionals on the costs of services.
